SEDIV Spec Miata Specifications

(Effective 10/07/2002)

General

Spec Miata Preparation rules Spec Miata vehicles are showroom stock, as defined by the SCCA GCR with the exception of the following restrictions or specifically allowed modifications. Unless specifically mentioned or approved in these rules, no additional modifications may be made. These rules are not intended as guidelines or suggestions and they will be vigorously enforced.

A. Make/Model of Car

1. All US spec models as factory delivered in the United States of Mazda MX5s

1990 through 1997, are permitted to become SPEC Miatas but must only use the

standard 5 speed transmission.

2. 90 - 93 Miata 1600cc @ 2255 lbs. (with driver)
3. 94 - 97 Miata 1800cc* @ 2380 lbs. (with driver)

Ballast will be mounted on passenger floor per GCR.

* '94-'95 1800cc cars must use a 47mm throttle restrictor.

* '96-'97 1800cc cars must use a 45mm throttle restrictor.

Throttle restrictor plates must  be those supplied by Mazda Competition, and may not be modified in any way including coating or surface treatment. It must be mounted between the throttle body and the intake plenum.

B. Engine

1. Stock only, per SCCA “Show Room Stock specification as published in the GCR.


C. Cooling System

1. Any aftermarket metal-type radiator may be used as long as it mounts to stock location.
2. Thermostats are free.

D. Intake System

1. 1600cc may use a cone-type air filter.
2. 1800cc must use a stock air box. Filter is free.


E. Fuel System
Unleaded fuel filler trap door and restrictor plate in filler neck may be removed.

F. Ignition System

1. Any spark plug may be used.
2. Any spark plug wire may be used.
3. Timing is free.
4. Master cutoff switch is permitted and recommended.


G. Exhaust System

Spec Exhaust as delivered from Mazda Comp. Or an alternate exhaust meeting these specs

1. Single pipe exhaust after the OEM front down pipe.
2. Maximum outside diameter 2.25". Muffler diameters are free.
3. Must exit behind rear sub-frame.
4. Must meet SCCA sound requirements.


H. Clutch

1. Clutch disk and pressure plate are free, providing they mount on the stock unmodified flywheel.

2. Clutch system components (master cylinder, slave cylinder, and lines) shall be OEM or equivalent.

3. Driveline components (CV joints and U joints) shall be OEM or equivalent.


I. Differential

1. 1600cc
a- viscous limited slip or Mazda comp LSD.

b. R&P Gear ratio: 4.3 to 1
Part # QN10-64-A00 (previously T0Y1-27-200 & 0000-02-5501)
2. 1800cc
a- OEM Torsen limited slip.
b- R&P Gear ratio: 4.1 to 1.


J.Suspension

1.Mazda Motorsports Spec Miata package
(Part# K-SPEC-M5-SUSP - 1990-93 1.6 DOHC),
(Part# K-SPEC-M5-SUS8 - 1994-97 1.8 DOHC)

b- Eibach ERS 2.5" I.D. Race Springs
1. Front 700 lbs./ 6" (Part# 0000-04-9700-06 Qty 2 ea.)
2. Rear 325 lbs./ 7" (Part# 0000-04-9325-07 Qty 2 ea.)
c- Coil-Over Kit. (Part# 0000-04-5402AW *)

* This kit provides all necessary components to locate spring in upper perch and includes modified bump rubbers/stops. Welding a 2.5" spring locator on the upper mount and modifying the stock length original bump rubbers to the diameter of 2.25" is grandfathered/allowed.

d- Eibach Sway Bar Kit.
1. 1600cc: Front Bar 24mm adjustable / Rear Bar 15mm adjustable (Part# 0000-04-5302-EB)
2. 1800cc: Front Bar 27mm non-adjustable / Rear Bar 15mm adjustable (Part# 0000-04-5303-EB)
a. Links connecting the sway bars to the suspension arms are free so long as neither the bar nor the arm are modified, and the attaching points are not changed.

3. Camber is Free
4. Ride height is free.

5. Chassis Braces

All cars are allowed to upgrade to the suspension bracing as used on the 1997 Miata. The mounting tabs must be purchased through Mazda Competition Parts.


K. Steering

1. Manual or power steering may be used. Power steering rack may be converted to manual.
2. Steering lock may be removed.

L. Wheels and Tires

1. Wheels: 15” diameter, maximum width 7” in matched sets of four. Minimum weight 13lbs
2. Tires: Toyo RA or Kumho V700.

3. All 4 wheels must be the same diameter, width and offset.

4. Any length wheel stud is allowed but must not extend beyond the outermost edge of the wheel. Any ferrous lug nut is allowed.


M. Brake System

1. Brake pads are free.
2. Steel braided lines may be used.
3. Backing plates may be removed.
4. Emergency brake handle and/or cables may be removed.

5. Any ABS brake system shall be disabled or removed. (as specified in GCR)

6. Brake system components (rotors, callipers and master cylinder) shall be OEM or equivalent



N. Exterior

1. No air dams, wings or spoilers are allowed other than "R" package chin spoiler.
2. Fenders and wheel openings shall remain unmodified except rolling or flattening of inner fender lip for tire clearance.
3. Hood and inner fender plastic trim optional.
4. Mirrors may be replaced and cars can be painted in non-factory colors.
5. Body molding, antenna, mirrors and emblems may be removed.
6. Windshield clips and rear window straps per the GCR Section 17.33 are permitted and recommended.
7. Hood clips are permitted. Stock hood latches may be disabled or removed.

8. Fuel Filler Door and Trunk release mechanisms may be modified and/or moved for ease of operation.

 

O. Interior

1. The driver's seat shall be replaced with a racing-type bucket seat. Factory seat tracks may be modified, reinforced or removed to facilitate replacement mountings provided they perform no other function. The floor pan may be modified to accommodate seat installation provided the modification is to accommodate installation of the seat and provides no other advantage or purpose. All driver seats shall meet the GCR Showroom Stock specifications. [see Fastrack, will be required for ‘03]

2.Gauges, instruments and switches may be added, replaced or removed. They may be installed in the original instrument(s) location using a mounting plate(s) or any other location using a secure method of attachment. Other than modifications made to mount instruments and provide for roll cage installation, the remainder of the dash "board" or panel shall remain intact.
3. Any steering wheel and attachments may be used except wood rimmed type steering wheels.
4. Any shift knob may be used.
5. A/C system may be removed (but not heater core or blower). Heater core may be bypassed but not removed
6. Carpets, center consoles, cargo bins, drivers seat belt, floor mat, radio system, headliners, dome lights, grab handles and their insulating and attaching materials may be removed. Other than to provide for the installation of required safety equipment or other authorized modifications, no other driver/passenger compartment alterations or gutting is permitted. Removal; or substitution of driver compartment panels is prohibited.
7. Any removable covers used to cover spare tires, tools, bins, etc. may be removed along with attaching hardware and brackets. Carpets, mats and their insulating or attaching materials may be removed from the floor and recesses of the cargo/spare tire area.
8. Ducting may be added to provide fresh air to the driver/passenger compartment. This ducting will be located in the driver/passenger vent window area by means of a transparent/alternate vent window material and duct with no modifications to the body work. Door glass area must remain free of all material except required safety equipment.
9. Passenger seat, mounting hardware and restraints may be removed.

10. The SRS computer, lines and sensors and the cruise control system may be removed


P. Safety

1.Welded or bolt-in cage with up to a maximum of 8 mounting points as per GCR Specs for per Improved Touring/Showroom

2.  Door bars on drivers side allowed to outer skin of door (NASCAR style). If door bars are used, door panel, door glass and mechanical hardware may be removed.
3.  Hard top must be used and bolted in place.
4. All other safety per Showroom Stock section of the GCR.
